Ethiopia: fire destroys UNESCO-registered coffee forest

April 30, 2013 (OPride) – A recent massive brush fire in the Illu Abba Boora zone of Oromia region, Ethiopia has wiped out a sizable portion of the UNESCO-registered Yayu Coffee Forest Biosphere Reserve, reports said. The cause of the blaze, which has spread around the Yayu forest over the last several weeks, remains unknown.

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam-Dedesa-Holeta 500 KV Power Transmission Project has been signed between Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation (EEPCo) and China Electric Power Equipment and Technology Co.Itd.

The transmission line is of double circuit and it stretches 1238 km from the Renaissance Dam to Dedesa to Holeta through 500kv transmission line. There will be two new substations in Dedesa and Holeta. The over 98 km transmission line of 400kv stretches from Holeta to three existing substations: Sebeta II, Sululta II and Akaki II. The total transmission line is 1336kv long.

The total transmission line contract price is US$ 820 million and the two substations construction costs over US$ 359 million. The overall cost of the project is over US$ 1.17 billion.

The Chinese Electric Power Equipment and Technology Co.Itd covers 85 % of the cost of the project from Chinese financial sources while the balance is financed by Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation. This implies the Chinese provide over a billion dollar to the construction of the transmission line project, which of course shows the very close relationship between China and Ethiopia.

When interest combined, the total contract amount of the project is over US$ 1.4 billion. The Project duration of the contract is 28 months after two months of the signing ceremony.

In the signing ceremony, CEO of EEPCo Mihret Debebe said the signing of the contract is historic as the Chinese keep providing financial support to such huge project to which the country attaches profound significance.

The Chinese responded saying Ethiopia is a strong economic and political ally in Africa and the cooperation between the two nations will remain strong.

The signing ceremony is attended by Dr. Debretsiyon Gebremichael with Deputy Prime Minister Portfolio, Minister of Water and Energy, Alemayehu Tegenu, State Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Ahmed Shide and other dignitaries.

የህዳሴ ግድብ ኃይል ጣቢያ በ1 ቢሊየን ዶላር የቻይና ብድር ሊሠራ ነው

ከታላቁ የኢትዮጵ ህዳሴ ግድብ የሚመነጨውን ኃይል የሚያስተላልፍና የሚያከፋፍል ጣቢያ ለመገንባት የሚያስችል የኮንትራት ስምምንት ተፈረመ። የማስተላለፊያና የማከፋፈያ ጣቢያ ግንባታው 1 ነጥብ 2 ቢሊዮን ዶላር ወጪ ይጠይቃል።

የኮንትራት ስምምነቱን የኢትዮጵያ ኤሌክትሪክ ኃይል ኮርፖሬሽን ዋና ሥራ አስፈጻሚ አቶ ምህረት ደበበና የቻይናው ኤሌክትሪክ ፓወር ኢኩዊፕመንት ና ቴክኖሎጂ ኩባንያ ተወካይ ሚስተር ዥያ ዥኪያንግ ፈርመዋል።

አቶ ምህረት በዚሁ ወቅት እንደተናገሩት ለፕሮጀክቱ ማስፈጸሚያ ከሚውለው ገንዘብ 85 በመቶ ከቻይና መንግሥት በብድር የሚገኝ ሲሆን፣ ቀሪው በኢትጵያ መንግሥት ይሸፈናል።

የጣቢያው ግንባታ በቀጣዮቹ 30 ቀናት ውስጥ ይጀመራል ያሉት ዋና ሥራ አስፈጻሚው፣ሥራው በ24 ወራት ጊዜ ውስጥ ሙሉ በሙሉ ይጠናቀቃል ተብሎ እንደሚጠበቅም ተናግረዋል።

የፕሮጀክቱ ጥናትና ዲዛይን ሥራ ሙሉ በሙሉ በኢትዮጵያውያን ባለሙያዎች መካሄዱን ገልጸው፣ በግንባታው ላይ የሁለቱም አገሮች ባለሙያዎች በጋራ እንደሚሳተፉ አስረድተዋል።

የኃይል ማስተላለፊያ መሥመሩ ባለ 500 እና 400 ኪሎ ቮልት የመሸከም አቅም ያለው ሲሆን፣ አጠቃላይ ርዝመቱ 700 ኪሎ ሜትር ይሸፍናል።

አቶ ምህረት እንዳሉት መሥመሩ ወደፊት በዓለም አቀፍ ደረጃ በኃይል ማስተላለፍ መስክ ለሚደረገው ግንኙነት ከፍተኛ ጠቀሜታም ይኖረዋል። ከግድቡ የሚመነጨውን ኃይል ከዋናው ብሄራዊ ሃይል ማዕከልር ለማገናኘት ከደዴሳ -ሆለታ፣ሰበታ ሁለት እንዲሁም ከሆለታ ወደ ሰበታ ከዚያም አቃቂ ወዳለው የኃይል ማከፋፊያ ጣቢያ እንዲገባ ይደረጋል።

ሚስተር ዥኪያንግ እንዳሉት ኩባንያቸው ፕሮጀክቱን በተያዘለት ጊዜ ውስጥ አጠናቅቆ እንደሚያስረክብ ገልጸዋል።

በፊርማው ሥነ ሥርዓት ላይ ኢትዮጵያ ኤሌክትሪክ ኃይል ኮርፖሬሽን የቦርድ ሰብሳቢ ዶክተር ደብረጽዮን ገብረሚካኤል፣የውሃና ኢነርጂ ሚኒስትር አቶ ዓለማየሁ ተገኑና ሌሎችም ከፍተኛ የመንግስት ባለሥልጣናት መገኘታቸውን የኢትዮጵያ ዜና አገልግሎት ዘግቧል።

The rise of Islamophobia in Ethiopia

April 26, 2013 (Open Democracy) — Recent demands have been the most vocal and the most sustained in the history of Ethiopian Muslims. But if they have gone the least bit beyond the scope of religion, then, ironically, they have been overtly secularist.

Many observers have documented the rise in Islamophobic sentiments in many western lands, especially since 9/11. While any collective castigation of a community is as stupid as it is immoral, sometimes it is not surprising. When innocent people get confronted successively with the shocking facts of sudden loss of life and property by through the actions of certain members of a group of people, the suspicion towards the whole group gets amplified.

Generational Shift May Shake Up Ethiopian Politics After Meles Zenawi

April 26, 2013 (World Politics Review) – The death of Prime Minister Meles Zenawi in August 2012 marked the end of an era in contemporary Ethiopian politics. After defeating the brutal Derg regime in 1991, Meles headed the powerful ruling party that led the country of more than 80 million through a massive transformation. But it is a mistake to think of his tenure as a period of one-man rule or his death as creating either a political vacuum or an opportunity for liberal reform, as power, authority and resources never rested in Meles’ hands alone.

ኢሳት ዜና:-ብሉበርግ ትናንት ይዞት በወጣው አስደንጋጭ ዘገባ በስምጥ ሸለቆ ውስጥ የሚገኘው የበሰቃ ሀይቅ በመስኖ ስራዎች እና በተፈጥሮ እንቅስቃሴ ምክንያት ጨዋማነቱ በ15 እጥፍ በመጨመሩ በሰኔ ወር ዝናብ ከዘነበና  ሀይቁ ወደ አዋሽ ወንዝ መፍሰስ ከጀመረ ፣ ወንዙን ለመጨረሻ ጊዜ ከጥቅም ውጭ ያደርገዋል ሲል ጠቅሷል።.

ስራ ጋር በተያያዘ በተፈጠረ የአፈር መሸርሸርና በመሬት የውስጥ እንቅስቃሴ ምክንያት ጨዋማነቱ ከመጠን በላይ እየጨመረ በመሄዱ የሚሊዮኖችን ህይወት ለአደጋ አጋልጧል።
በውሀ እና ኢነርጂ ሚኒስቴር የከርሰ ምድር ውሀዎች ዋና ሀላፊ የሆኑት አቶ ተስፋ ታደሰ ፣ “ሀይቁ በራሱ ጊዜ ወደ አዋሽ መፍሰስ ከጀመረ የአዋሽ ወንዝ ለዘላለሙ ከጥቅም ውጭ ይሆናል።” ብለዋል።

የላይሻው አዋሽ ወንዝ የውሀ ጥናት ባለሙያ የሆኑት አቶ  እንደሻው ታደሰ  ደግሞ የሰኔ ዝናብ ከመዝነቡ በፊት ሀይቁ ወደ አዋሽ ወንዝ እንዳይፈስ ወሳኝ ጥረት መደረግ አለበት ሲሉ አሳስበዋል። ባለሙያው እንደሚሉት ከአዲስ አበባ በስተምስራቅ የሚገኘው ሀይቅ ወደ ወንዙ ከፈሰሰ ከተሞችን ከማጥለቅለቅ አልፎ የአካባቢውን አርብቶ አደሮች ሊያፈናቅላቸው ይችላል።

ብሉበርግ እንደሚለው መንግስት ላለፉት 14 አመታት የውሀ ፓምፖችን በመጠቀምና ቦዮችን በመስራት በሰቃን ለመቆጣጠር ጥረት ቢያደርግም አልተሰካላትም።

በአለማያ ዩኒቨርስቲ የሲቪል ኢንጂነርግ ረዳት ፕሮፌሰር የሆኑት መገርሳ  ዲንቃ እንደተናገሩት በአካባቢው የሚደረገው የመስኖ ስራ  ችግሩን አባብሶታል። ፕሮፌሰሩ የመሬት እንቅስቃሴው ለሀይቁ መስፋፋት ተጨማሪ አስተዋጽኦ አድርጎ ሊሆን እንደሚችልም ገልጸዋል።

የመንግስት ባለስልጣናት ከዚህ ቀደም በላይኛው አዋሽ ላይ ሲካሄድ የነበረው የመስኖ እንቅስቃሴ ችግሩን እንዳባባሰው ለማመን ተገደዋል።

በመተሀራ አካባቢ ያለውን የላይኛው የአዋሽ አግሮ እንዱስተሪ ኢንተርፕራይዝ፣ የሼክ ሙሀመድ አላሙዲ ንብረት የሆነው ሆራይዞን ፕላንቴሽን በቅርቡ መግዛቱ ይታወሳል። የሆራይዞን ዋና ስራ አስኪያጅ አቶ ጀማል አህመድ እንዳሉት በላይኛው አዋሽ ላይ የሚካሄደው የመስኖ ስራ ምንም አይነት የአካባቢ ተጽኖ አላመጣም፤ ይሁን እንጅ ድርጅታቸው ችግሩን ለማጥናት ከመንግስት ጋር ለመተባበር ዝግጁ ነው ብለዋል።
የበሰቃ ሀይቅ ወደ አዋሽ ወንዝ ከፈሰሰ 23 ሚሊዮን ዶላር የወጣበት የሼክ ሙሀመድ አላሙዲ ድርጅት፣ ከህንድ አገር በተገኘ የ640 ሚሊዮን ዶላር ብድር የማስፋፍያ ስራ የሚሰራለት የተንዳሆ ስኳር ፋብሪካ፣ 30 ሺ ነዋሪዎች የሚኖሩባቸው  መተሀራ እና አዲስ ከተማ እንዲሁም የመተሀራና የተንዳሆ የስኳር ፋብሪካዎች ሙሉ በሙሉ ከጥቅም ውጭ ይሆናሉ።ው በመካከለኛው አዋሽ አካባቢ ያለው የአምቢባራ ቢዝነዝ ግሩፕ ንብረት የሆነው የጥጥ እርሻ እና በአጣቃላይ ድምራቸው 5 ቢሊዮን ዶላር ካፒታል ያላቸው ፕሮጀክቶች በሙሉ ከጥቅም ውጭ ይሆናሉ።

“ሰኔ ላይ ዝናብ ከዘነበ ሁሉም ነገር ተፈጸመ” ሲሉ የውሀ ባለሙያው  አቶ እንዳሻው አስጠንቅቀዋል።
የበሰቃ ሀይቅ ጨዋማነት እየተፋጠነ የመጣው የክልሉ መንግስት በ467 ሚሊዮን ብር ወጪ ለመስኖ ስራ የሚያገለግለውን የፈንታሌ ቦይ መገንባት ከጀመረ ጊዜ ጀምሮ መሆኑን ደግሞ በኢትዮጵያ ውሀ ስራዎች፣ ዲዛይን እና ሱፐር ቪይዢን ኢንተርፕራይዝ ስራ አስኪያጅ የሆኑት አቶ እንግዳ ዘመድኩን ተናግረዋል።

ውሀ በፓምፕ ለማስወጣት የተደረገው ጥረት አልተሳካም፣ የሚሉት የመንግስቱ ባለስልጣን አቶ ተስፋየ ደግሞ አዋሽ ወንዝ በራሱ 4 በመቶ ጨውነት ያለው በመሆኑ ከዚህ መጠን ካለፈ ውሀውን ከጥቅም ውጭ ያደርገዋል ብለዋል።

ፕሮፌሰር መገርሳ ደግሞ ” የሀይቁ ጨውነት በምንም ይጨምር በምንም፣  በሰቃ ሀይቅ ወደ አዋሽ ወንዝ መፍሰሱ እና የመተሀራ ስኳር ፋብሪካን በሚቀጥሉት ጥቂት አመታት ውስጥ ማውደሙ አይቀሬ ነው።  ተንዳሆን ጨምሮ በታችኛው የውሀ ክፍል የሚካሄዱ ፕሮጀክቶችም በሙሉ በሙሉ ይወድማሉ” ብለዋል ፕሮፌሰሩ። ረዳት ፕሮፌሰር መገርሳ የአዋሽን ውሀ ለመጠጥነት በሚጠቀሙት የአፋር ተወላጆች ላይ የከፋ አደጋ እንደሚከሰትም ገልጸዋል።

ምንም እንኳ የመንግስት ባለስልጣናትና ባለሙያዎች በጋራ የበሰቃን ሀይቅ እያጠኑ ቢሆንም ፣ አቶ ተስፋየ እንደሚሉት ለጊዜው መንግስት ስለሚወስደው እርምጃ አቅጣጫው ጠፍቶበታል።

በአካባቢ ጥበቃ ዙሪያ መረጃዎችን በማሰባሰብ ችግሩን ለማሳወቅ ጥረት ሲያደረግ የነበረው የፎቶ ጋዜጠኛው ቢኒያም መንገሻ ፣ ሀይቁ የፈጠረውን አደጋ ለመንግስት ለማቅረብ ተደጋጋሚ ሙከራ ቢደርግም በመንግስት በኩል የተሰጠው ትኩረት አናሳ መሆን ችግሩን እንዳባባሰው ተናግሯል

3 ኪሎ ሜትር ስፋት ብቻ የነበረው የበሰቃ ሀይቅ በአለፉት አርባ አመታት ውስጥ ወደ 45 ኪሎሜትር ከፍ ማለቱን በዘገባው ተመልክቷል። ሟቹ ጠቅላይ ሚኒሰትር አቶ መለስ ዜናዊ አፍረካ የአካባቢ ጠበቃ እየተባሉ ሲወደሱ እንደነበር ይታወሳል።
