Amnesty Says Ethiopia Detains 5,000 Oromos Illegally Since 2011

Ethiopia’s government illegally detained at least 5,000 members of the country’s most populous ethnic group, the Oromo, over the past four years as it seeks to crush political dissent, Amnesty International said. 

Victims include politicians, students, singers and civil servants, sometimes only for wearing Oromo traditional dress, or for holding influential positions within the community, the London-based advocacy group said in a report today. Most people

were detained without charge, some for years, with many tortured and dozens killed, it said.

Ethiopia sentences three magazine owners to jail

Addis Ababa (AFP) - Ethiopia has sentenced three magazine owners in absentia to more than three years in prison, a government spokesman said Wednesday, as a leading media rights group condemned the "shocking" ruling.

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) named the three as Endalkachew Tesfaye of the Addis Guday magazine, Gizaw Taye of Lomi, and Fatuma Nuriya of Fact.

"The three have all been sentenced for three years and some months," government spokesman Redwan Hussein told AFP.

RSF said the magazine owners, who are all outside the country, were found guilty on Tuesday of "inciting violent revolts, printing and distributing unfounded rumours and conspiring to unlawfully abolish the constitutional system of the country."

Rights groups routinely accuse Ethiopia of using anti-terrorism laws to silence dissent and jail critics.

"The clearly outrageous grounds for their conviction are indicative of how a very authoritarian regime is manipulating the justice system," RSF said in a statement.

"This type of persecution amounts to banning independent media in Ethiopia altogether."

Several journalists have been jailed in Ethiopia, many under terrorism laws.

Those include two Swedish journalists sentenced to 11 years in prison in 2012. They were pardoned after serving 15 months.

Dissident blogger Eskinder Nega is currently serving an 18-year sentence for alleged links to the outlawed Ginbot 7 group, which calls for the violent overthrow of the ruling party.

The insider alleged that the main objective of the meeting was to seal a new deal that would strengthen the Ethiopian rebels groups to destabilize the SPLA rebels’ main military training centers in Maiwut and Pagak at the eastern corridor of South Sudan – Ethiopia border.

According to the insider, Gen.Thokwaath has been tasked to establish links with other rebel groups within Ethiopia to form a coalition that will fight for a regime change and destabilize South Sudan Peace Process in Bahir Dar.

Ethiopia blames Eritrea for disturbance at embassy in US

October 4, 2014, ADDIS ABABA (Sudan Tribune) – The Ethiopian government has pointed its finger at arch enemy Eritrea and Ethiopian opposition groups over a disturbance that took place at the Ethiopian embassy in Washington.

Ethiopia’s ambassador to the US, Girma Biru, said around 15 people had been involved in the incident, which occurred at the embassy on Monday.

Ethiopia: Fake medical doctor arrested in Bedele

A man by the name Andualem Gebre who is from Hawassa traveled to Bedele Town and Told a hospital that he was assigned to work by the Oromya Health Bureau. The Fake medical doctor was dressed to look like a professional health officer, when suddenly searched by a police he was holding a bag of trash.
The Local police office wrote a letter to the bureau to confirm about the profession and arrested him and was jailed for one and half year.

“Who Owns the Waters of the Nile?” – Oromo scholars raise critical questions regarding the waters of the Nile on Nordic African Days 2014 held in Uppsala, Sweden

Two Oromo scholars, Professor Mekuria Bulcha¹ and Dr. Techane Bosona^2, have participated in the Nordic African Days 2014 Conference held on 26-27 September in Uppsala (Sweden), and have discussed both the open and hidden conflicts over the waters of the Nile. Their paper titled “Who Owns the Waters of the Nile? Reflections on the Conflict between Ethiopia and Egypt over the Ethiopian Grand Dam” was presented on the Panel – The Horn of Africa in Quest for Harmonious Coexistence of State and Society. In their joint paper, the two Oromo scholars raise both interstate and intrastate (hidden) conflicts over the waters of the Nile. They argue that although the threat of the Abyssinian kings to stop the flow of the Blue Nile to Egypt was mere bluff in the past, today it is becoming real through the construction of the Ethiopian Grand Dam. The Ethiopian authorities say that they have sovereign rights over the waters that originate in their territory and will build the dam as planned.

Juba ( Agencies + DIPLOMAT.SO) – The South Sudan government demanded the removal of Ethiopian chief mediator Seyoum Mesfin after accusing him of pursuing “regime change” at the behest of the Troika members of the US, UK and Norway.

Government spokesman Micheal Makuei Lueth told BBC’s Focus on Africa program on Tuesday that the former Ethiopian foreign minister was so weak and for “being influenced that easily by others” naming the Troika members.

He further accused the Troika member states of trying to force “regime change” and being “responsible for the beginning of the crisis” in South Sudan.
